Fantastic lighting as well; are the light sources like the one overhead the driver and the street lights actual (DirectX) light sources?

There are three types of lighting in OMSI: First, as you have correctly noticed, is the DirectX-based light effect which illuminates the surrounding area and is therefore used for single lamps. The other types are called lightmap (a texture containing the flare which will be multiplied over the main texture to create a coherent light effect on a larger surface like the interior walls and ceilings, the streetlights use this effect as well) and nightmap (a special texture for luminescent surfaces like the lamp itself).

Unfortunately we do not know the date of release. But notice: There are only two devolepers working on OMSI. They've been working on it for two years ...
