High Speed Gearbox for SD202 (D88-D92)

As we start building faster routes it became evident to me that we need the SD202 to have higher top speed as 45 MPH (72 km/h) on a country road feels too slow for me, considering the route I am making should have over 20 miles of country road to cover!! So I edited the gear ratios of the SD202 (the SD200 are ok as they are, IMHO) to allow the D88 onwards to reach 55 MPH (88 km/h) so it can keep up with the cars, haha. I will post download link tomorrow. BTW its still a 3 speed Voith, with slower acceleration and higher top speed (long ratio gearbox).

Editing the final gear ratio is easy, changing the individual gear ratios seems to be more differcult. I wish someone please explain how the transmission works in OMSI.

Done some editing in the consist file for the transmission of the D88. Changed the shifting patterns.. apparently the values are not tied to the engine rpms, yet to some other RPM, maybe the transmission rpm or axle rpm, who knows! That makes extremely low shifting possible. Edited the patterns for economy shifting.

The shifting patterns are based on the cardan shaft RPM, i.e. the gearbox output RPM. So they stay constant e.g. when using different tire sizes or axle ratios.

When you do, let me know - I have ZF gear ratios that we could use to make some of the buses ZF Ecomat 4HP500 driven! In the meantime here is the download for my high speed gearbox (and, yes I did edit the 1st and 2nd ratios, aswell as the third - editing only the top gear ratio would only give minimal speed increase.) I think getting 16 km/h extra out of it isn't too bad

Used some of my past programming experience, managed to add a new gear to OMSI. It is a pretty lengthy process, not really since the coding is already there. All that needs to be done is following the patterns in the scripting...

i can not get it to downshift from gear 4 to 3 though even though the values are there.

For your information, actual final drive ratios available for O 305 VÖV buses were:

5.9:1 = 75km/h

5.2:1 = 85km/h

4.8:1 = 100km/h

The tradeoff is top speed vs. acceleration. A 4.8:1 final drive ratio will give very slow acceleration with the MAN D25 engine, albeit with a very high top speed.

All that depends on the diameter of the wheels as well and max engine RPM as well. In OMSI, engine max is 2300 RPM. Heck I even done an Excel sheet on the engine's torque curve as well. Most efficient rpms are between 1800-2000RPM, anything higher than that, the horsepower/kw will start to drop. I have added another gear into the simulator; just recently I edited the up shift from 3 to 4th speed.
It will now shift at 72 km/h, probably the efficient shift speed is probably somewhere between 64-70 km/h. been working out the funkiness of the downshift, managed to get it working for the most part. Give the shift from 3rd into 4th, the 3rd gear up/down shift sound as well. Used the Env_upshift_3 sound or something like that. Looks like I am starting to get a hang of the whole scripting thing. Hopefully the developers will clarify the whole scripting process down the road.

So the ratio of the added fourth gear is 0.70, which will be the overdrive. I found this ratio from an official chart off of voith's website. I have no idea how the double 1.34 ratio for 1st and 2nd gear in OMSI works though. the first ratio seems to be tied to the torque converter ratio or something, after checking out voith's website, they gave the 1st gear an ratio of 5.54 or somewhere in that range. My guess is that the torque converter ratio has something to do with the long 1st gear of the voith.

The 4-speed Voiths over here have ratios of 5.05:1 in 1st, 1.36:1 in 2nd, 1:1 in 3rd and 0.73:1 in 4th.

First gear on a Voith is a sliding ratio.

Very nice,it reminds me to real 4speed voith,but it still needs 5th gear(when you reach speed above 80 and not accelarating,it go to fifth-like E in cars,but when you press thortle it back to fourth.)

Voith does not make a five speed transmission. In fact, even a 4 speed voith transmission of the period (1980-1989) would be considered a 'anachronism". I think you are refering to the ZF transmission, though... Heck even having arbitrary shift points are possible in this sim as well. Do not thank me, thank M-R for creating such a realistic simulator. After briefly checking out the scripting, it is not as simple as pushing the throttle down and the bus moves, in fact they totally break the main components of the drivetrain down. In that" other simulator", however, it simple as push the throttle down and the sound will come. The last gear of the bus in that other sim is extremely unrealistic!

Well I am going to update the values to make the 5th grade more aggressive, so far I lower the shift point slightly on the 1st gear of the transmission. Also lowered the last shift from 72 km/h down to 66 km/h. That should avoid the "jerking" into last gear. defaulted the max acceleration shift back to -0.2 as well.

Still trying to figure out how the torque converter works in OMSI. trying to expand its coverage into the second gear. I want to create a 4 zf speed transmission, in OMSI, that would be 5 gears. 1c, 2c, 2l, 3l, 4l . I hope one of the developers could spread some light on the kuupla settings

In fact, it would be six: The first gear also uses the lockup.

These values define the coupling torque when changing gears. There are four values: for upshift and downshift and for minimum and maximum throttle (interpolation based on the actual throttle when shifting).

The other lines of code do indeed refer to the characteristic of the torque converter. But this script is optimised for the special Voith "differential torque converter". As the ZF gearboxes have their torque converter simply on the primary side of the drivetrain, it could technically be used in any gear, not just the first two. But this requires some larger changes in the script (now, the ratio of the first gear is the result of several characteristic lines...for a ZF gearbod, the ratio would additionally have to change based on the current gear ratio).

Thank you for your clarification, I hope you guys do a script down the road for the ZF transmission. Not anytime in the very near future since I do realize you guys has been busy working on the SDK and the simulator, but when the dust settles down the road!

... And in fact you can hear / feel the torque converter locking and unlocking in all but 5th and 6th gears on a ZF gearbox. Some ZF gearboxes are programmed to not lock up in 1st and change directly from unlocked 1st to unlocked 2nd.
