North American buses, at least most of 'em, have pneumatic windscreen wipers. That means that to switch them on, you must physically move a handle which enables air to flow into the system. The sprinklers, however, are electrically controlled. Thus they are separate. In Europe, windscreen wipers are electric ever since the early 50's, so they behave like the wipers on most cars, when you switch on the sprinklers the system will automatically switch on the wipers as well for a few rounds, and then switch them back off. It is interesting to observe the extreme differences between trends in busbuilding between america and the rest of the world, I still hadn't really figured the reasons for it yet. For example, just as a US busdriver will find it weird that the wipers come on with the sprinklers, the European driver will find it inconceivable that one handle controls the two doors, thus the back door is not independently operated...
